Maricopa drivers should expect a slower trip north of the city this weekend. The Arizona Department of Transportation says State Route 347 will be reduced to one lane in each direction between Casa Blanca Road and Riggs Road while crews continue paving.
The restriction is scheduled to stay in place through the weekend, not just overnight. ADOT's SR 347 project traffic alert lists the northbound restriction from 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 25, to 4 a.m. Monday, Sept. 28. Southbound is listed from 8 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday.
This is a lane reduction rather than a full highway closure. One lane is expected to remain open in each direction, but traffic must merge through the work zone. A long queue can form even when a road technically remains open, especially when weekend trips, sporting events or Phoenix-area freeway work add traffic at the same time.
An official timing conflict drivers should know about
ADOT has two current notices for the same weekend, and their hours do not match perfectly.
The detailed project alert gives the 8 p.m. Friday start and different Monday end times for northbound and southbound traffic. ADOT's broader Sept. 25–28 weekend freeway advisory, also published Sept. 24, says the two-way reduction runs from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday.
Because the project-specific alert is more detailed and starts earlier, the cautious plan is to assume lane restrictions may begin at 8 p.m. Friday. Before leaving, check AZ511 for the current condition. Construction schedules can change because of weather, equipment or other conditions.
That timing difference is also why this article does not give a single guaranteed reopening minute. Northbound may return to two lanes before southbound, and field conditions can change the plan.
What happens after the weekend
The weekend paving is followed by more overnight work in the same corridor. ADOT currently lists:
Monday through Wednesday nights, Sept. 28–30: northbound SR 347 narrows from Casa Blanca to Riggs roads from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. for materials testing.
Monday through Wednesday nights, Sept. 28–30: southbound narrows from Riggs to Casa Blanca roads from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Thursday night, Oct. 1: northbound narrows from Casa Blanca Road to Mammoth Way from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. Friday for paving.
Thursday night, Oct. 1: southbound narrows from Mammoth Way to Casa Blanca Road from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Friday.
ADOT's lookahead also flags daytime and overnight restrictions for the weekends of Oct. 3 and Oct. 10, but the agency has not yet posted a final lane-by-lane schedule for those windows. Treat those dates as advance notice, not a finished traffic plan.
How this work fits the larger SR 347 project
The current operation is part of the pavement-rehabilitation phase of the larger SR 347 Improvement Project. ADOT says this first phase is underway and is expected to run from July through December 2026. Later phases call for another lane in each direction, a concrete median barrier, new interchanges at Riggs Road and Mammoth Way, and intersection improvements near Casa Blanca and Maricopa roads.
Those future improvements are not all open now. This weekend's work is paving inside an active 14-mile construction corridor. ADOT lists a 55 mph limit through the corridor and 45 mph in active work zones.
