MHS workforce-development expansion is under construction, with July 2027 opening target

MUSD lists its $21.375 million Maricopa High School workforce-development expansion and gym renovation as under construction, with a July 2027 opening target.

One of Maricopa Unified School District’s largest active campus projects is now in the construction phase.

MUSD’s current project dashboard lists the Maricopa High School Workforce Development Expansion and Gym Renovation as “In Construction Phase.” The district gives the project a cost of $21,375,000, funded by bond money, and lists July 2027 as the target opening.

That stage label is the key update. The project is no longer described only as a design or planning concept. At the same time, the district’s public project card does not provide a detailed construction calendar, weekly campus-impact map or room-by-room program list, so those details should not be filled in from assumption.

What MUSD has confirmed

The district’s public project page confirms four core facts:

  • The project is at Maricopa High School.

  • It combines a workforce-development expansion with a gym renovation.

  • The listed cost is $21.375 million in bond funding.

  • The target opening is July 2027.

The project title signals two goals: more space connected to workforce preparation and improvements to an existing athletic facility. The public card does not yet identify every career pathway that will use the expansion, so families should wait for a district program announcement before treating any particular trade or certification as guaranteed.

Why the construction stage matters

School capital projects pass through several stages before students enter a new space. A concept can change during design. A design can wait for financing, procurement or permits. A project labeled in construction has crossed a more concrete threshold, even though completion dates can still move.

MUSD’s July 2027 target would place the new and renovated space into service for the school year that begins after the current construction cycle. The dashboard uses “opens” for that date; it does not publish a ribbon-cutting date or promise that every program component will begin on the same day.

What families should watch during the work

The public project card does not list temporary entrances, parking changes, construction-hour restrictions or athletic schedule adjustments. Those operational notices can change more quickly than the overall project page.

Students, parents and visitors should use MUSD and Maricopa High School notices for:

  1. Changes to student drop-off, parking or pedestrian routes.

  2. Temporary gym or athletic-facility access rules.

  3. Construction milestones and revised completion timing.

  4. The final list of workforce programs and classrooms.

  5. Enrollment or application instructions tied to the expanded programs.

OurMaricopa’s Maricopa schools and education directory can help families find the district and campus contact routes. Time-sensitive campus directions should always come from the school or district itself.

Bond construction is separate from the operating override

The project dashboard identifies the $21.375 million as bond funding. That should not be confused with MUSD’s current operating-budget override question.

Bond projects generally finance long-lived facilities and major capital work. An operating override addresses budget authority for ongoing services and programs. OurMaricopa’s Proposition 416 voter guide explains the separate operating measure on the Nov. 3 ballot.

Keeping those two topics separate helps readers understand what is already being built and what voters are being asked to decide.

Part of a larger buildout

The MHS expansion is one piece of a broader MUSD facilities pipeline. The district also lists a second K–8 campus in design and additional high-school classroom space targeted for July 2028. Alma Farrell Innovation Academy, identified as K–8 #1 on the same dashboard, is listed as completed and opened in July 2026.

Those projects are at different stages and carry different funding descriptions. The MHS work stands out today because the district has explicitly moved it into construction.

What remains unanswered

The current public dashboard does not answer several questions residents may reasonably have:

  • Which workforce pathways will occupy the new space?

  • How much of the $21.375 million is assigned to the expansion versus the gym renovation?

  • Will the project change athletic access during specific seasons?

  • When will the district publish construction progress photographs or milestone dates?

  • Is July 2027 the start-of-school target or a broader completion month?

Those are follow-up items for MUSD. Until the district publishes more, the accurate description is straightforward: a $21.375 million MHS workforce-development expansion and gym renovation is in construction, with a July 2027 opening target.
