Maricopa-area teens interested in leadership, community service and local government can still find a Youth Council application on the City's current program page.

The City of Maricopa Youth Council page lists the program as free and open to applicants ages 13 through 18. An 18-year-old applicant must still be in high school.

The City calendar lists the next Youth Council meeting for Monday, Oct. 19, at 5 p.m. at Maricopa City Hall, 39700 W. Civic Center Plaza S. The listing describes the meeting for Youth Council members; prospective applicants should contact the program before treating it as an open observation opportunity.

Who is eligible

The program page begins with a City-residency requirement, then its FAQ gives a more specific service area: the City of Maricopa, the Maricopa planning area, the Ak-Chin Indian Community or the Gila River Indian Community.

Applicants also must be available for meeting and event dates. The FAQ says the council meets up to twice a month and sometimes three times a month. Members are required to complete volunteer hours at events or within youth programs.

The City does not publish an application deadline, current membership count or number of open seats on the page. Submitting a form should not be treated as confirmation of appointment. Ask staff whether applications are still being placed into the current council year and what happens after submission.

What participants do

The City's Aug. 12 invitation describes a program built around discussions, community projects and learning how local government works. It also identifies opportunities to meet City and state leaders and take part in educational activities.

Those are program opportunities, not a promise that every member will attend every trip or receive a particular role. The practical commitment is the one stated on the current program page: meetings, event dates and volunteer hours.

For teens building a service record, the strongest value may be the combination of repeated local involvement and exposure to public decision-making. Families should still compare the meeting load with school, work, transportation and other commitments before applying.

How to apply — and one detail to verify

The current Youth Council page says applications can be:

  1. Emailed to Cultural Services Supervisor Brenda Campbell at brenda.campbell@maricopa-az.gov; or

  2. Returned to the Copper Sky front desk.

The linked 2026 application PDF contains a different paper-drop instruction, naming Maricopa City Hall, and it prints a different final digit in the staff phone number than the current landing page. Because the email address agrees across the materials, email is the clearest documented route. Before making a paper drop-off, call the number on the current program page — 520-316-6963 — and ask which location staff want applicants to use.

That discrepancy does not establish that either location will reject a form. It is a reason to confirm rather than send a family to the wrong counter.

Questions to ask before submitting

  • Are applications currently being accepted for the active council year?

  • Is there a remaining orientation or onboarding step?

  • What are the next required meeting and event dates?

  • How many volunteer hours are expected, and how are they recorded?

  • Should a paper application go to Copper Sky or City Hall?

  • May a prospective applicant observe a meeting, and if so, what time should they arrive?

Families can track other public dates on the OurMaricopa community calendar, find City contacts in the community and public-services directory, and review school commitments through the MUSD district calendar.

The application page is active, the basic qualifications are clear and the program is free. The remaining questions — current capacity, the next onboarding step and paper drop-off location — are best settled directly with Youth Council staff.
