Maricopa High School’s varsity football team was held scoreless Friday night in a 21–0 home loss to Sunnyside.

The result ends a two-game Maricopa winning streak and moves the Rams to 5–3 overall. It is Maricopa’s second shutout loss of the season after the 47–0 opener against Mountain Pointe.

A difficult turn after two road wins

Maricopa entered Friday’s region game after winning twice away from home: 12–0 at Mountain View on Oct. 2 and 21–14 at Mingus on Oct. 9.

Sunnyside arrived with a losing record, but the Blue Devils controlled the scoring and left Maricopa without a point. The final was posted overnight by MaxPreps, the Arizona Interscholastic Association’s official scores and statistics partner.

The available public result does not include a complete, verified drive chart or individual Maricopa statistics. OurMaricopa is therefore limiting this recap to the final score, season context and the next confirmed game instead of inventing a turning point or naming players without support.

What the result changes

Before kickoff, Maricopa was 5–2 and had won four road games. The Rams had also shown a wide scoring range: 61 points against Flowing Wells, 57 against Empire, 40 against Casa Grande and just six in the loss to Desert View.

Friday’s shutout drops the overall record to 5–3. MaxPreps’ automated recap lists Sunnyside at 3–5 after the win.

The result also adds weight to the final two scheduled region games. Maricopa hosts Nogales next Friday and finishes the regular-season schedule at Cienega on Oct. 30. Official standings and playoff positioning can change as all region results are entered, so readers should use AZPreps365 for the current table.

Nogales comes to Maricopa next

The next scheduled game is:

  • Opponent: Nogales Apaches

  • Date: Friday, Oct. 23

  • Time: 7 p.m.

  • Location: Maricopa High School, 45012 W. Honeycutt Ave.

  • Type: 5A Southern region game

The AIA team page lists tickets through GoFan. Ticket availability, kickoff details and weather can change, so confirm the game page before traveling.

Nogales entered this week at 2–5 on the statewide schedule. That record does not make the game automatic; Friday’s result is a reminder that season records do not score points once the game begins.

What to watch next week

The immediate question is how Maricopa’s offense responds after its first scoreless night since August. The Rams have already rebounded once this season: after losing 46–6 to Desert View on Sept. 25, they won the next two games.

The defense also has a recent shutout of its own, the 12–0 win at Mountain View. A bounce-back against Nogales would keep the Rams from carrying Friday’s result into the road finale at Cienega.

Readers looking for the official schedule should use the AZPreps365 Maricopa team page. OurMaricopa’s earlier Desert View recap provides context on the other region loss.

The final score is the firm news from Friday. More detailed analysis should wait for verified statistics, coach comments or game video that directly supports it.
