People interested in becoming a Maricopa police officer have a new date to put on the calendar.

The City of Maricopa's indexed 2026 police-recruit testing schedule lists the next application period as Oct. 12 through Nov. 8, followed by testing on Thursday, Nov. 12. Applicants should confirm that the matching City job posting is live on Oct. 12 before submitting anything, because the schedule document's legacy direct link returned a Page Not Found message during OurMaricopa's Sept. 29 check.

The live Maricopa Police Department careers page remains the best source for qualifications, benefits and what happens after an application is accepted.

The next dates on the schedule

  • Application window opens: Monday, Oct. 12.

  • Application deadline: Sunday, Nov. 8.

  • Recruit testing: Thursday, Nov. 12.

The same City-indexed schedule lists another cycle opening Nov. 23, closing Dec. 13 and testing Dec. 19. MPD's current careers page says testing is typically offered about every six weeks.

Who can apply

MPD says applicants must be United States citizens and must be at least 21 years old by the time they graduate from the police academy. A high-school diploma or GED is required.

Applicants must pass background and medical requirements and obtain an Arizona Class D driver's license by the time of hire. A felony conviction is disqualifying, and candidates must meet other Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board requirements.

The department does not require officers to live inside Maricopa, but its FAQ says officers must be able to respond within a reasonable time when called.

Anyone unsure about a qualification or background issue should read the complete MPD and AZPOST requirements before applying. The summary here does not replace those standards or the instructions in the actual job posting.

Testing and hiring timeline

For police-recruit candidates, MPD says the written test and physical-fitness test are administered on the same day. The City schedule provides the test date, but the job posting or applicant instructions should provide the exact reporting time, location and any required documents.

MPD estimates an average of 60 to 90 days from application to conditional offer. That is an average, not a guaranteed decision date. Background work, medical steps and other parts of the hiring process can affect an individual candidate's timeline.

The department says most police academies last about 26 weeks. Recruits receive a biweekly salary and health benefits while attending the academy.

Pay and benefits

The live MPD careers page lists a police-officer salary range of $68,349.78 to $100,022 a year. Prospective applicants should not read the top of that range as a guaranteed recruit starting salary; the job posting should identify the compensation that applies to the specific opening and candidate.

Listed benefits include paid holidays and leave, a uniform allowance, tuition reimbursement, life insurance, Public Service Loan Forgiveness employer eligibility and zero-cost employee medical, dental and vision plan options. MPD also lists a Copper Sky Recreation Complex membership among its benefits.

Benefits, premiums and eligibility rules can change. The City job notice and Human Resources materials control for the active recruitment.

How to prepare before Oct. 12

Start with MPD's careers page, then check the City's careers portal when the window is due to open. Review the qualifications, gather required records and leave enough time to complete the application before Nov. 8.

OurMaricopa's local jobs page collects additional employment resources, while the community and public services directory provides local agency information.

The useful distinction is that the dates are on the City's 2026 recruitment calendar, while a live job posting is the final signal that applications are being accepted. Confirm both before relying on the schedule.
