Maricopa’s new Fieldhouse at Copper Sky is open, adding a large indoor home for basketball, volleyball, pickleball and other community uses. The part residents need to know before driving over is that the building does not operate with fixed public drop-in hours.

The City’s Oct. 14 opening guide says court availability will change around youth practices, league games, tournaments and events. The monthly drop-in calendar is therefore the controlling schedule for public play.

What it costs

Current Copper Sky members may use Fieldhouse drop-in activities without paying an additional admission fee, according to the City.

For people who only want the Fieldhouse, the City lists day passes at:

  • $6 for adults

  • $3 for youth and students

A full Copper Sky membership or full-facility day pass covers both the Fieldhouse and the Copper Sky Multigenerational Center. A discounted Fieldhouse-only pass is limited to the Fieldhouse.

Because programs and rentals may carry their own fees, residents should treat those prices as admission for the access described by the City, not a guarantee that every court or activity is available at any time.

Why the hours are different

The new building is designed as a flexible court facility. The City says youth sports practices will usually occupy courts Monday through Thursday evenings, while league games are expected on Saturdays.

That makes a single “open gym” schedule impractical. Public basketball, volleyball, pickleball and other drop-in sessions will be placed on a monthly calendar as space becomes available.

The first two public offerings highlighted by the City are:

  • Pickleball: Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7 to 11 a.m., beginning Tuesday, Oct. 20.

  • Teen Drop-In Night: Friday, Oct. 30, from 5 to 9 p.m.

Those are announced starting points, not a permanent promise for every future month. Check the latest Fieldhouse calendar before making a special trip.

What is inside

The City’s annual financial report describes about 44,000 square feet of indoor court and rental space. The floor can be configured for four full basketball courts, six volleyball courts or 12 pickleball courts.

The Oct. 10 grand opening also demonstrated how the building can support activities beyond league play. The City says it can host tournaments, art fairs, community events and other programs depending on availability.

That flexibility is the main public benefit and the reason schedules may move. A tournament setup, youth league or rental can change which courts are available for casual play.

Age and supervision rules

Children age 12 and older may use the Fieldhouse independently with the appropriate wristband. Children 11 and younger must be supervised by someone who is at least 16 unless they are participating in a City or membership program.

Some recreation equipment will be available to check out, but the City encourages players to bring their own. Anyone planning a specific sport should confirm the session on the calendar and bring the equipment the activity requires.

How to avoid a wasted trip

  1. Open the City’s current Fieldhouse or Copper Sky drop-in calendar.

  2. Confirm the sport, date and time rather than assuming general open-gym hours.

  3. Decide whether a Fieldhouse-only pass or full Copper Sky access fits the visit.

  4. Check the supervision rule if a child is attending without a parent.

  5. Recheck on the day of the visit because rentals and events can affect court availability.

The Fieldhouse is at 17985 Greythorn Drive within the Copper Sky Recreation Complex. For other local facilities and activities, residents can also use OurMaricopa’s parks and recreation directory and community calendar.

The practical takeaway is simple: Maricopa now has a major indoor court facility, but the best first stop is the schedule, not the front door.
