Copper Sky's new courts: when to play, learn and celebrate next week

Plan for Copper Sky's new pickleball and volleyball courts: Sept. 22 celebrations, Sept. 26 beginner play, registration timing and details to check.

By OurMaricopa Staff

Copper Sky's new pickleball and volleyball courts get their opening week celebration next week. For Maricopa residents, the choice is between a Tuesday evening with competition and costumes and a Saturday morning built around learning the game.

The city's official schedule flyer lists three gatherings:

  • Tuesday, Sept. 22: Ribbon cutting — 8 a.m. Arizona time.

  • Tuesday, Sept. 22: New Courts on the Block / Top Gun Volleyball — 6–9 p.m. Arizona time.

  • Saturday, Sept. 26: Discover Pickleball — 8–11 a.m. Arizona time.

Pick the session that fits

Tuesday night's party combines a pickleball round-robin tournament, sand volleyball, '80s music and a costume contest. Volleyball players may bring a team or join others, according to the city's Sept. 10 announcement.

Tournament preregistration is supposed to start the day before—Monday, Sept. 21—through ActiveNet. The announcement also allows in-person signup at 6 p.m. Tuesday. It leaves detailed tournament rules for a later update.

Saturday's session offers beginner instruction and open play. Local ambassadors will explain rules, techniques and equipment, with opportunities to connect with other players. A newcomer looking for an introduction may find that a better starting point than entering Tuesday's tournament.
